Mental Health Promotion Competency Framework
Building an effective mental health promotion system requires a common language and a strong workforce with well-developed skills.
As a key step in achieving this goal, Prevention United has worked with mental health promotion workers across a range of settings including local government, community organisations, health service organisations and peak bodies to develop the Mental Health Promotion Competency Framework, which provides a shared understanding of the underpinning competencies that are necessary to perform this work.
Mental health promotion is a field of endeavour that aims to achieve three key aims:
- Promote high levels of mental wellbeing – or flourishing – across the entire community.
- Prevent the onset or occurrence of mental health conditions, wherever we can.
- Build people’s mental health and wellbeing literacy.
The Mental Health Promotion Competency Framework describes the knowledge, skills and attributes required to design, deliver and support effective mental health promotion initiatives. Regardless of their role or work setting, there are certain ‘core competencies’ across six domains that all mental health promotion workers require. These key domains are shown in the image below.
For further detail about each of these domains and the specific knowledge and skills relevant to each one, access the full Mental Health Promotion Competency Framework.
Prevention United has developed a series of training workshops aligned with these competencies to help build a shared understanding and approach to the work of mental health promotion.
