Family environment

Families come in all different sizes and structures, and every family’s dynamic is unique. The main thing for kids’ wellbeing is that there’s a positive family atmosphere and parents, siblings and other relatives get along well and support each other.

The reverse is equally true. Severe or ongoing parental conflict or family violence can be particularly harmful to children’s and teenagers’ mental wellbeing. Bullying within families or homophobic rejection can also contribute to mental health conditions.

Getting along isn’t always easy. We all get frustrated and irritated sometimes. But respect, good communication and a commitment to giving every family member a fair go can all help to create a positive family climate that allows everyone to flourish.
